Repair of the Month – Univox Uni-Tron 5

This came into the shop needing some TLC. It had sporadic output, and, it didn’t sound ANYTHING like it should. Sounded cool, but not normal. The two switches were totally broken and had to be replaced. The stomp switch was intermittent and was also replaced. And finally, the two 9-volt battery clips were replaced. Kay Fuzztone repro

Just finished a custom job for a client…a Kay Fuzztone repro. Really cool pedal. I’m thinking about doing a limited run of these but I’m still in the air about the enclosures. I really don’t want to hunt down a bunch of old wah-pedals. I’d love to convert an old sewing machine foot pedal into one. That’d be sweet, eh?

Maton ECW80C refret

My repair of the month for October was this Maton ECW80C that needed a fret job. Maton guitars are made in Australia and the few I’ve played were all very nice instruments. This refret posed no problems except finding a proper truss rod wrench. Instead of having a standard hexagonal truss rod bolt it had a square end. I was able to fashion together about 7 parts from my ratchet set and make it work.

This is my repair of the month for multiple reasons. One is that I’ve never played one of these. Another is how great it looks. And last but not least is how well it setup and played. Nice straight neck, low action, good intonation…perfect for practicing my King Sunny Ade licks.

The Siss Boom Bang is in town!

K.D. Lang and the Siss Boom Bang are in town for a show at the Zoo. Guitarist, Josh Grange, needed some work done on his Custom Shop Tele Thinline. I installed a bone nut and did a setup. The neck relief and neck angle needed quite a bit of tweaking but the guitar was singing after the adjustments were made. Off to the show tonight!

Repair of the month: 1967 Gibson J-45

My favorite repair this month was on a 1967 Gibson J-45. It had been hibernating under my client’s bed for quite a while…like 25 years. It needed a bridge-reglue, a setup, and a serious cleaning. Check out more pics at my flickr page.

An email from Marc Ribot

I’m very excited about getting an email from one of, if not, my favorite guitarist, Marc Ribot. He’s been using a Fuzz-Stang in the studio recently and is diggin’ it. Most recently he’s been putting it to use with his own band, Ceramic Dog, which I can’t wait to hear.
